February 9th (Saturday, today) @ 2pm-3pm – Guitar “Poetry” with Hiroya Tsukamoto @ Westport Library, 20 Jesup Road, Westport. Tsukamoto is an internationally acclaimed guitarist and composer originally from Japan. February 17th (Sunday) @ 1pm-4pm – The Fairfield Scribes are presenting a workshop (presenters include Ed Ahern and Alison McBain) on short story writing and submitting @ Westport Library, 20 Jesup Road, Westport. How to write, edit, and where to submit short stories for publication. Focus on speculative fiction, literary and mainstream stories. February 22nd (Friday) @ 1pm-3pm – A monthly discussion of a chosen poet, led by Dr. Alan Holder, this group meets on the last Friday of each month (skipping July and August) @ Ridgefield Library, 472 Main Street, Ridgefield. If a member of Friends of the Ridgefield Library, receive a complimentary copy of the poetry book under discussion. March 23rd (every other week for 4 weeks, starting on 3/23) – Poetry by Heart, led by Andrew Levine @ Ridgefield Library, 472 Main Street, Ridgefield. Learn a poem by heart. Free, but registration is required. April 5th (Friday) @ 7pm-9:30pm – Fbomb @ KGB Bar, 85 E 4th Street, New York, NY (3rd floor). An evening of 4-8 authors reading their short fiction and poetry, including Alison McBain. May 5th (Sunday) @ 2pm-4pm – Jack Powers, Edward Ahern, Jeff Schwartz, and Alison McBain poetry reading and book signing @ The Fairfield Public Library, 1080 Old Post Road, Fairfield. PLACES TO READ YOUR POETRY February 22nd (Friday) @ 7pm-9pm – Ignition: An Evening of Poetry with “Art in Common, Inc.” Read any type of poetry in the company of many other local poets. Free, but registration is required. Connecticut Open Mikes – A listing of open mike opportunities all around CT. CT Poetry Calendar – Another listing of open mike opportunities, specifically for poets in CT. Every 3rd Tuesday of the month @ 7-9pm – WritersMic @ Panera’s Restaurant, 1860 Post Road (near Home Goods), Westport. Free, casual open-mike format – all forms of creative writing OK to read. Each reader will have 5 minutes/about 1000 words. While not a critique group, you can request feedback afterwards. PLACES TO SUBMIT YOUR POETRY Publisher: Spirit First Poetry Contest Deadline: February 28 Enter up to 3 submissions to [email protected] of poems on the theme of Meditation or Mindfulness (no line/word count limit). Free to submit. 1st/2nd/3rd prizes: $200/$150/$100. Publisher: EChapbooks Deadline: February 28 Submit up to 3 poems (at least 1 unpublished). Theme: Upheavals. Blind readings – work will be judged by the work alone, not by the poet’s past publishing history. Payment: $5 for poems. Submission fee: $2. Publisher: Unstamatic Deadline: Ongoing submissions. Looking for poetry of 10 lines or fewer. They are especially interested in experimental forms. Payment: $10. Publisher: Typishly Deadline: Tuesdays/ongoing. Free to submit, and a FAST response time to submission – less than a week. Residency: Poets in Parks Deadline: March 2 Curated with the Poetry Foundation, the residency would be from 9/15-10/12 and the recipient poets will receive a $1000 stipend. Fee: $35-$70 to apply. About Us:The Poets' Salon is an all-inclusive group that gets together the second Saturday of every month from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m in the Memorial Room at the Fairfield Public Library.
