UPCOMING POETRY READINGS/WORKSHOPS
June 23rd (Sunday) @ 2-3pm – Grand Re-Opening of the Transformed Library @ Westport Library, 20 Jesup Road, Westport. Join local poets Ann Cefola, Ralph Nazareth, Neddy Smith, Jerry Johnson, Edward Ahern, and Alison McBain as they read their poetry and lead a short workshop on the process of writing and submitting poetry for publication, including an opportunity to write a poem of your own! The panelists will also do a "drive-by poeting" at the end of the session, where they will be happy to hand-write a personalized poem for volunteer participants to take home with them. Kids are very welcome to join in! June 29th-30th (Saturday-Sunday) @ 11am-1pm, 3pm-5pm each day – 3rd Annual Poets, Writers and Storytellers Stage @ the Norwalk Arts Festival, Mathews Park, West Avenue, Norwalk (by the Lockwood Mathews Mansion Museum). Readings by Poets’ Salon members Bill Hayden (featured poet, Poet Laureate of Norwalk), Edward Ahern, and Alison McBain, as well as dozens of other local poets. Open mic, still room to sign up to read! PLACES TO READ YOUR POETRY Every 1st & 3rd Monday of the month @ 6:30-8:30pm – Poetry Workshop with Poet Laureate Bill Hayden @ Norwalk Public Library, 1 Belden Avenue, Norwalk (Children’s Activity Room). Each workshop we plan to have informal readings of original poems or works in progress, so come prepared to read something that you wrote, or are working on, and want to try out in a safe space. Please bring extra copies to share for the group to make comments on if you wish. This is simply to receive peer reactions and comments. We'll also allow for verbal feedback time after each person reads. Please let me know if you plan to attend the workshop. Every 2nd Monday of the month @ 7-8:30pm – Monday Night Poetry @ Barnes & Noble Bookstore (Stamford Town Center), 100 Greyrock Place Suite H009, Stamford. Open to anyone living in Fairfield County and the surrounding area. Come contribute, get something to eat, or simply listen! Every 3rd Tuesday of the month @ 7-9pm – WritersMic @ Panera’s Restaurant, 1860 Post Road (near Home Goods), Westport. Free, casual open-mike format – all forms of creative writing OK to read. Each reader will have 5 minutes/about 1000 words. While not a critique group, you can request feedback afterwards. Every 3rd Thursday of the month @ 7-9pm – The Poetry Institute Poetry Series @ The Young Men’s Institute Library, 847 Chapel Street, New Haven. The Poetry Institute Poetry Series celebrates an eclectic mix of poetic voices. Free. Refreshments. (And participants are invited to bring something to share.) Open mike. Meeting format is a structured workshop. Participants are expected to be members of (or to join) the Connecticut Poetry Society. Bring one poem and copies of it for the other participants. Publisher: Talking Writing Deadline: June 17 Contest: The annual Talking Writing Prize for Poetry offers $500 and publication for the winner. Submit up to 5 poems, no more than 7 pages total. Theme: The Age of Extinction. $15 entry fee. All submissions, even if not the winning entry, will be considered for publication. Publisher: JuxtaProse Deadline: June 25 (Chapbook Prize), December 3 (Poetry Prize) Contest (Chapbook Prize): The annual JuxtaProse Chapbook Prize offers $1000, publication, and 50 free print copies of the book for the winner. Submit a single poetry manuscript of 20-40 pages. $20-$25 entry fee. Contest (Poetry Prize): The annual JuxtaProse Poetry Prize offers $1000 and publication for the winner. Up to 3 additional poems may be selected as honorable mentions and receive $100 and publication. Submit up to 5 poems, no more than 7 pages total. $13-$18 entry fee. About Us:The Poets' Salon is an all-inclusive group that gets together the second Saturday of every month from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m in the Memorial Room at the Fairfield Public Library.
