March 23rd (every other week for 4 weeks, starting on 3/23) – Poetry by Heart, led by Andrew Levine @ Ridgefield Library, 472 Main Street, Ridgefield. Learn a poem by heart. Free, but registration is required. April 5th (Friday) @ 7pm-9:30pm – Fbomb @ KGB Bar, 85 E 4th Street, New York, NY (3rd floor). An evening of 4-8 authors reading their short fiction and poetry, including Alison McBain. April 13th (Saturday) @ 1:30pm-4pm – Poetry Month Celebration @ Fairfield Library, 1080 Old Post Road, Fairfield. Open mic, chat about writing and publishing poetry, with food, snacks and drinks provided. May 5th (Sunday) @ 2pm-4pm – Jack Powers, Edward Ahern, Jeff Schwartz, and Alison McBain poetry reading and book signing @ The Fairfield Public Library, 1080 Old Post Road, Fairfield. PLACES TO READ YOUR POETRY Connecticut Open Mikes – A listing of open mike opportunities all around CT. CT Poetry Calendar – Another listing of open mike opportunities, specifically for poets in CT. Every 3rd Tuesday of the month @ 7-9pm – WritersMic @ Panera’s Restaurant, 1860 Post Road (near Home Goods), Westport. Free, casual open-mike format – all forms of creative writing OK to read. Each reader will have 5 minutes/about 1000 words. While not a critique group, you can request feedback afterwards. PLACES TO SUBMIT YOUR POETRY Publisher: Hudson Valley Writers Center/Coffee Labs Roasters Deadline: March 10, 2019 Short poems on any subject – 1 poem/person. Selected poem wins a $5 gift certificate to Coffee Labs and $5 gift certificate to Writers Center. Poems will remain unpublished, but the poet’s name and poem title will be posted on the Writers Center website. Send poem to [email protected] with “Coffee Poems” in subject. Publisher: Southeast Review Deadline: March 15, 2019 Gearheart Poetry Contest: sub up to 3 poems (10 pages max), entry fee: $16. Blind read, up to 5 finalists will be announced on website, and the winner will receive $500. Publisher: Verse Deadline: March 15, 2019 Contest: Tomaž Šalamun Prize – sub a chapbook of 20-28 pages, $15 entry fee, blind read. Winner receives $500, chapbook publication by Factory Hollow Press, 10 copies of the book, plus one-month residency in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Publisher: The Spectacle Deadline: March 15, 2019 Submit 3-5 poems (up to 8 pages). Fee: $2.50. Payment of $50 if accepted. Publisher: The Missouri Review Deadline: March 15, 2019 Contest: Miller Audio Prize. Fee: variable ($10-$30). All submissions of poetry must be recorded/spoken aloud; entries must be 15 minutes or shorter. Top prize: $1000. Publisher: Ageless Authors Deadline: March 31, 2019 Contest: 1 poem, maximum length 50 lines. Only open to writers age 65 or older. Prizes: $100 first prize, $75 second prize, $50 third prize. Honorable mentions receive certificates. Work is also entered in the Bivona Prize (looking for bold and audacious writing), top prize: $250. Publisher: Winning Writers Wergle Flomp Humor Poetry Contest, FREE to submit, 250 lines max, prizes: first: $1000, second: $250, 10 honorable mentions: $100, plus publication for all 12 winning entries. About Us:The Poets' Salon is an all-inclusive group that gets together the second Saturday of every month from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m in the Memorial Room at the Fairfield Public Library.
